Aston Villa’s difficult start to the new Premier League season has taken another worrying turn, with one of Unai Emery’s key players facing the consequences of an earlier mistake that could cost the club far more than the three points they lost against Arsenal.

But while the attention naturally falls on Saka’s winner and Villa’s disappointing result, another issue could become an even bigger problem for Emery in the matches ahead.

João Gomes’ red card against Crystal Palace has already started to have serious consequences.

The midfielder was dismissed for violent conduct after VAR intervened, with the referee deciding that Gomes had kicked out at an opponent. Because the offence was classified as violent conduct rather than a standard sending-off offence, Gomes faces a minimum three-match suspension.

That means Villa are not simply losing one player for one match.

Gomes is set to miss the Arsenal clash, the upcoming meeting with Hull City and another Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.

For a Villa side already going through a major rebuild, that could prove extremely costly.

The midfielder’s disciplinary mistake has effectively turned one moment of madness into a potential three-game problem.

And that is why some Villa supporters could look back at the red card as something that cost the club considerably more than the points dropped against Arsenal.

There is also pressure on Emery to find a solution quickly.

Villa’s midfield will need to cope without Gomes, while new players continue adapting to the manager’s system. The club are also dealing with injuries and other squad issues, increasing the importance of having experienced options available.

The good news is that Villa’s performance against Arsenal offered some encouragement.

But performances alone will not be enough.
