France Storm Into Last 16 as Mbappe Breaks World Cup Record

France delivered another dominant World Cup performance as they brushed aside Sweden 3–0 to book their place in the last 16, where Paraguay now await.

Kylian Mbappe once again stole the spotlight, scoring twice to become the outright leading goalscorer in World Cup knockout-stage history with 10 goals. The French captain also moved level with Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot, with both players now sitting on six goals.

Despite difficult conditions under the intense New Jersey heat, France started aggressively and quickly took control.

Sweden had a golden opportunity to respond immediately, but Elliot Stroud sent his effort over the bar from close range.

France made Sweden pay for that miss shortly after the restart. Bradley Barcola timed his run perfectly to meet an intelligent pass from Olise before powering a finish into the near post to double the advantage.

The French attack remained relentless. Dembele forced another strong save, while Olise was denied in a one-on-one situation.

Mbappe eventually sealed the result in the 74th minute. Running onto yet another brilliant pass from Olise, he curled a composed finish beyond Widell Zetterstrom for his second of the evening.

Sweden nearly grabbed a late consolation when Gyokeres broke through on goal, but Mike Maignan produced a strong save to preserve France’s clean sheet.

France will now face Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July, after Paraguay progressed by defeating Germany on penalties.

Analysis: France Growing Stronger With Every Match

France are increasingly looking like the team to beat at this World Cup.

Didier Deschamps’ side have now won all of their matches in the tournament so far and appear even more dangerous than in previous campaigns.

Mbappe’s influence continues to grow, but the chemistry between him, Olise, Barcola and Dembele has become one of France’s biggest strengths. Their movement and understanding in attack repeatedly overwhelmed Sweden.

Breaking Ronaldo’s knockout-stage scoring record adds another remarkable achievement to Mbappe’s growing legacy, yet his celebration with Deschamps after the goal showed the human side behind the statistics.

With France aiming for a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, confidence is building that they could go all the way.

If they continue performing at this level, a repeat of the 2022 final against Argentina may still be on the horizon.
