The New York Knicks head coaching search has been met with plenty of scrutiny around the NBA. After the team fired Tom Thibodeau — who helped shaped the franchise’s turnaround — on June 3, many have chimed in with their two-cents on the Knicks’ process since then.

The latest critic is that of former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers. In particular, Myers called out the Knicks for their unorthodox approach of asking other NBA teams for permission to interview their head coaches. The Knicks have been denied permission by five NBA teams thus far (Bulls, Mavericks, Hawks, Timberwolves, Rockets).

On an appearance with Sirius XM NBA Radio, Myers simulated how he would react in a hypothetical scenario in which the Knicks called him to ask about Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr.

“I’d be a little bit like, ‘You’re jacking up my own situation here, and you’re not offering anything?,” Myers said. “So now everybody knows you called on my coach, and now my coach is gonna come in and want more money, so you better offer me something.”

Myers might have a point here. In the days and weeks that followed since the Knicks reached out, the Chicago Bulls granted Billy Donovan a long-term extension, and then the Houston Rockets did the same with Ime Udoka.

Aside from poaching from other teams, the Knicks have conducted interviews with Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown for their head coaching vacancy. Barring anything unforeseen, those two appear to be the primary candidates to land the job.
