A documentary titled “Five for the Sheriff: The Manning Legacy” is reportedly in production for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series.

Knoxville, TN — The legend is coming home. In a move that has sparked waves of nostalgia and pride across Rocky Top, Netflix has officially announced the release date of its highly anticipated documentary, “Five for the Sheriff: The Peyton Manning’s Tennessee Legacy.” The film, set to debut globally on August 15, 2025, promises to be a stirring tribute to one of college football’s most iconic quarterbacks and Tennessee’s most beloved son: Peyton Manning.

🎬 A Story 28 Years in the Making

Before the Super Bowls, the MVPs, the Omaha calls, and the Hall of Fame induction, Peyton Manning was simply “#16 in orange” — a prodigy who turned Neyland Stadium into his stage and captured the hearts of Vol Nation. “Five for the Sheriff” takes viewers deep into the transformative years Manning spent with the University of Tennessee Volunteers (1994–1997), wearing jersey No. 16 and laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most storied careers in football history.

The title is a symbolic nod — “The Sheriff” being Manning’s iconic NFL nickname, and “Five” representing the number of major milestones he achieved in Knoxville:

1. Leading Tennessee to an SEC Championship run

2. Finishing as Heisman runner-up in 1997

3. Shattering school and conference passing records

4. Becoming a team captain and academic All-American

5. Cementing a legacy that turned him into the face of college football

📽️ What to Expect: Exclusive Access, Never-Before-Seen Footage, and Star-Studded Interviews

Produced by Omaha Productions (Manning’s own company), in collaboration with Netflix and directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Rory Karpf (The Book of Manning, SEC Storied), the documentary blends archival footage, personal home videos, and newly filmed interviews to tell the inside story of Peyton’s time in Knoxville.

The film features appearances from:

Archie and Eli Manning, offering family insights

Phillip Fulmer, legendary Tennessee coach

Al Wilson, peer and former teammate

Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier, SEC coaching legends

Kenny Chesney, country star and fellow UT alumnus

And, of course, Peyton Manning himself, in rare, candid reflection

Expect heartfelt moments, behind-the-scenes revelations, and game-day drama, all leading up to the fateful decision Peyton made in 1997 — to stay for his senior year and finish what he started.

🧡 A Love Letter to Rocky Top

The documentary isn’t just about football. It’s about leadership, loyalty, and the power of place. “This film is a love letter to Tennessee,” said Manning in a brief statement shared through Netflix. “To the teammates who became brothers, to Coach Fulmer who believed in me, and to the fans who made me feel like family from day one.”

Manning’s Tennessee tenure, though never crowned with a national title, remains one of the most cherished eras in Volunteer history. His decision to bypass the NFL Draft in 1996 and return for his senior year stands as a defining act of commitment — both to his education and to the orange and white.

🌎 Global Spotlight on Rocky Top

The release of “Five for the Sheriff” marks a new chapter in how college football stories are told. With Netflix’s global reach, millions of viewers — from New York to New Delhi — will witness the electric atmosphere of Neyland Stadium, the spirit of SEC Saturdays, and the making of a football icon.

Already, buzz is building across sports media, with the film projected to be a frontrunner during awards season for Best Sports Documentary.
