Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has triggered a major Premier League debate after launching a furious post-match attack on Leeds United fans, claiming a controversial chant from the Elland Road crowd directly influenced the outcome of United’s 1–1 draw and cost his side two vital points.
The clash in Leeds had been finely balanced after goals from Brendan Aaronson (62′) and Matheus Cunha (65′), with both teams pushing for a winner in an intense final phase. However, Amorim insists the game turned not on tactics or substitutions, but on events in the stands.
Speaking in a tense post-match interview, the United boss said a chant that began around the 67th minute crossed a line and should have forced immediate intervention from match officials.
“What was that chant?” Amorim said bluntly.
“WTF is that chant? If this continues, no club will ever respect Leeds United again. This is not football atmosphere, this is interference.”
Amorim claimed the chant unsettled his players at a crucial moment when Manchester United were building momentum and pushing Leeds deeper into their own half.
“We were in control,” he continued.
“You could feel it on the pitch. Then this starts, and suddenly the game changes. Players lose focus, emotions rise, and the referee just lets it go. That’s not acceptable.”
The Portuguese coach went further, calling on the Premier League to formally investigate the incident, stressing that the issue goes beyond rivalry or hostile home support.
“This is not about noise or pressure,” he said.
“This is about protecting the game. If the league allows this to become normal, then every club will suffer from it at some point.”
Amorim’s comments immediately ignited backlash and debate. Leeds United supporters accused the United boss of making excuses for failing to secure all three points, pointing out that both sides had chances late on. Many fans argued that Elland Road’s atmosphere has always been intense and that United simply couldn’t cope with it.
Manchester United fans, however, largely backed their manager, with several describing the chant as “deliberate provocation” designed to disrupt play rather than support the home team.
Pundits were split. Some criticised Amorim for deflecting attention away from missed opportunities and game management, while others acknowledged that crowd behaviour has increasingly become a flashpoint across the league.
